How to Start a Salon Franchise Business in India (2026 Guide)

TL;DR

Starting a salon franchise business in India is a 90 to 120 day journey. Here is how to pick the right brand, arrange finance, choose the format, negotiate the agreement, and scale from one outlet to a mini-network.

Starting a salon franchise business in India is a 90 to 120 day journey from decision to grand opening. Unlike opening a single independent salon, franchising gives you a proven brand, operating manual and central marketing, but adds a layer of due diligence up front. Here is the exact 2026 playbook.

Step 1: Decide why you want to franchise

Franchising is right for you if you want a systematised business, are comfortable following brand SOPs and want faster customer acquisition than an independent brand can deliver. It is wrong if you want full creative control or if you cannot commit to being present in the business for the first 12 months.

Step 2: Set your capital envelope

  • Under ₹20 Lakh: studio formats (TrimHub studio, Green Trends compact)
  • ₹20 to 50 Lakh: standard unisex formats (TrimHub standard, Naturals, Jawed Habib)
  • ₹50 Lakh to ₹1 Crore: premium formats (Looks, Lakmé, YLG, Enrich)
  • Above ₹1 Crore: luxury and international brands (Toni & Guy, BBLUNT flagship)

Keep 6 months of working capital on top of setup cost. Most first-year cash crunches come from underestimating working capital, not capex.

Step 3: Shortlist and evaluate brands

Do not sign with the first brand that responds. Shortlist 3 to 5 and score them on:

  • Total capex including franchise fee, fit-out, deposits and working capital
  • Royalty structure (flat vs stacked marketing levies)
  • Central marketing spend and quality
  • Territory exclusivity and radius protection
  • Existing franchisee references (talk to at least three)
  • Renewal terms and exit clauses

Step 4: Arrange finance

  • Self-funded: fastest, cleanest, no interest cost
  • MSME loan: most public and private banks offer salon franchise loans up to ₹50 Lakh under CGTMSE. Interest 10 to 13%, tenure 5 to 7 years
  • Mudra loan: up to ₹10 Lakh for smaller studio formats
  • NBFC loans: faster approval, higher rates (14 to 18%)
  • Brand-assisted finance: some franchisors (including TrimHub) partner with lenders for pre-approved funding

Step 5: Sign the franchise agreement

Get a franchise lawyer to review the agreement. Key clauses to scrutinise: royalty and marketing fee structure, territory exclusivity, minimum performance guarantees, product sourcing lock-ins, exit and transfer terms, and dispute resolution jurisdiction. Never sign a 10-year agreement without a mid-term renewal window.

Step 6: Lock the location

The single biggest predictor of profit is location. Target rent-to-revenue below 12%, ground-floor visibility with 8 ft+ frontage, parking for 4 to 6 vehicles, and residential density within 2 km. A Tier 2 A+ location beats a Tier 1 B location on ROI almost every time.

Step 7: Licenses, fit-out and hiring

  • GST, Shops & Establishments, Trade License, Fire NOC, Pollution NOC, Signage license
  • Fit-out: 45 to 60 days for a studio, 60 to 90 for premium
  • Hire 1 senior stylist per 2 juniors; the senior sets the culture
  • Send staff for 3 to 4 weeks of central brand training before opening

Step 8: Launch and first 90 days

Soft launch 2 weeks before grand opening to iron out SOP gaps. Run pre-opening ads for 3 weeks, target 200+ pre-bookings for opening month. First 90 days should hit 60 to 70% capacity utilisation. If you are below 40% at day 90, review location, pricing and staff quality.

Step 9: Scale to multi-outlet

Most successful salon franchisees run 3 to 5 outlets within 4 years. Only open outlet #2 after outlet #1 hits breakeven and has run 6 months profitably. Use outlet #1 as a training and staff pipeline for the next.
